Trust properties

The Countryside Restoration Trust acquires, by purchase and gift, farms and woodland with a view to restore or maintain native wildlife and the traditional appearance of the land by appropriate methods of husbandry.

From a start in 1993, when a 40-acre field was bought at Barton, Cambridgeshire, the CRT has acquired nine properties in different parts of England. These total over 1200 acres and include arable and livestock farm, smallholding, woodland and orchard.

Our land will be used to show the public how its food is produced; farmers will see how profitable farming can take place with conservation; and conservationists will learn some of the difficulties faced by farmers. In addition, Government will see how its farming and conservation schemes can be extended for the greater pleasure of us all. It is an example which many throughout Britain will be able to follow.

Support Groups

Volunteer Support Groups The Support Group for each property carries out conservation work and wildlife monitoring.

On Volunteer Days, which anyone can join, Support Group working parties help with tree and hedge planting, painting gates, clearing scrub, knocking down bracken, pulling ragwort, erecting nest boxes, and other essential (and healthy!) work.

Systematic monitoring of animals and plants is essential for demonstrating that our less intensive management systems are benefiting wildlife.

Support Groups also assist with local fundraising, support local promotions and Open Days, as well as playing a part in recruiting Friends of the CRT.

Support Groups often require volunteers to take on the roles of co-ordinating wildlife monitoring, working parties and local fundraising and publicity. Volunteers with time and useful skills are always appreciated!

Above all the CRT aims to help the volunteer members of the Support Group enjoy everything they are involved with and ensure that the meetings and gatherings are always interesting.

If you are interested in volunteering your time and expertise, please contact us and we will put you in touch with your local Support Group.
